You’ve got dozens or hundreds of them, they’re cheap enough that nobody notices one going missing until it’s the fifth one this year, and they move constantly between vans, depots and jobs. TotalCtrl tracks tools with a low-cost Bluetooth (BLE) tag fitted to each one, so custody and location stay current without the cost or bulk of a GPS unit per tool.

Every tool gets a BLE tag

A small, battery-powered tag fitted to the tool itself, with a typical lifespan of 2 to 3 years depending on tag type and ping frequency.

Location is inferred through crowd-sourced Bluetooth

The tag is anonymously picked up by nearby Android and Apple devices already out in the world, at an interval you set from every 10 minutes to once an hour, and TotalCtrl receives the location and plots it on a map.

So "where's the strimmer" or "which van has the leak detector" has a real answer, without anyone scanning anything.

The mobile app flags a tool left behind

If an engineer moves on from a job or site without a tool that should be with them, the app alerts them with its last known location so they can go back and retrieve it.

What is tool tracking in field service?

It's knowing the location and custody of individual tools (drills, mowers, test equipment) using low-cost Bluetooth tags rather than full GPS hardware, which makes it economical to tag high-volume, lower-value items you wouldn't otherwise track individually.

How is tool tracking different from asset tracking?

Asset tracking covers higher-value plant and equipment (generators, pumps, plant) fitted with a discreet hardware tracker for continuous location data. Tool tracking covers smaller, higher-volume items like drills and mowers, fitted with a low-cost BLE tag that reports location via crowd-sourced Bluetooth rather than GPS.

What technology is used to track tools?

Each tool carries a battery-powered BLE tag. Do engineers need to do anything for this to work?

No. Once a tool is tagged, location and custody update on their own. There's no scanning or logging required day to day.
